Jessie Jeyasingh

25 years old, Singapore

Jessie chose Madakademiet as her introduction to Denmark, its culture and people. She moved to Denmark with her Danish boyfriend, after having completed her education in culture and psychology in Singapore.

-I think a good way to learn about a new country is through its culinary culture. I didn’t know anything about almond cakes or other traditional Danish baking recipes before, or potatoes with parsley for that matter. I have tried completely new things here, for example, I will never forget the day the butcher came with a pig, and cut it open and told us what the meat was called, and how it should be prepared.

Before coming to Suhr’s, Jessie had taken a short course in Danish and could only a little bit of Danish: -I got more acquainted with the Danish language through trips to museums, where we learned about Danish history and interior design.

The one thing that has surprised Jessie the most is the tone at school.

-Everyone is so nice. The teachers are interested in what we do and use the method “learn and see and try it for yourself” with us. A teacher in Singapore is mostly just about checking you before an exam.
